“The miracle is not that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.”

“Character is the discipline to follow through with resolutions long after the spirit in which they were made has passed.”

“Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” -Atticus Finch

“Every ceiling, when reached, becomes a floor, upon which one walks as a matter of course and prescriptive right.” Aldous Huxley

“The challenge in running is not to aim at doing the things no one else has done, but to keep doing things anyone could do—but most never will.” Joe Henderson in The Complete Book of Running

“It’s a long, hard road and it’s going to have its bumps; there are going to be times when you fall and times when you don’t feel like going on anymore, times when you’re just crazy tired but it takes focusing on that one step you’re taking. That’s what I’m trying to do with the marathon; I don’t think about the miles that are coming down the road, I don’t think about the mile I’m on right now, I don’t think about the miles I’ve already covered. I think about what I’m doing right now, just being lost in the moment.

Ryan Hall on running a marathon

Positive self-talk script:

I am a runner. I am a marathoner. I love the way it makes me feel when I’m finished. I am strong. I can just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming. I never quit before I finish. Athena was a goddess and I am a badass. People are so proud of me. I love and appreciate my healthy body. I’m putting the past behind. New song, new vibe. Fast, flat, friendly, Fargo.

  1. Tiffany, I know you get the Runner’s World quotes in your inbox every day, but who can remember all those little gems? This one is worth remembering. And, it seems very fitting for those days when we wear tights!

Running reminds me that there is more to me than what is readily apparent much of the time. I don’t always need to see it, but oh how I need to know it’s there. Like having an alter ego, or a super-cool super-hero identity. –Kristen Armstrong

  2. “Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.”
    – George S. Patton, U.S. Army General, 1912 Olympian
